An Intervertebral disc lies between adjacent vertibrae in the vertebral column. Intervertebral discs consist of an outer fibrous ring, the anulus fibrosus , which surrounds an inner gel-like center, the nucleus pulposus. The intervertebral disc functions to separate the vertebrae from each other and provides the surface for the shock-absorbing gel of the nucleus pulposus.
INTER VERTIBRAL DISC DISORDES
- DISC BULGE
- SPINAL DISC HERNIATION
- VERTIBRAL COMPRESSION FRACTURES
- DEGENERATIVE DISC DISORDERS
- LOW BACK ACHE
A bulging disc is a condition in which the nucleus (inner portion) of a spinal disc remains contained within the annulus fibrosus (outer portion), unlike a Herniated disc in which a crack occurs in the outer layer(Annulus) of the disc, The crack usually affects a small part of the disc, and then allows the soft inner material of the nucleus pulpous to rupture out of the disc .
A bulging disc is considered normal as a part of both the aging process and the degeneration process of the inter-vertebral disc and is not necessarily a sign that anything serious is happening to spine. It becomes serious when it bulges enough to cause narrowing of spinal canal.
Bulging discs are fairly common in people and need not be panic. The symptoms of a disc bulge include pain, numbness, and muscle weakness. A herniated disc can also have pain that feels like it is coming from another part of your body, such as heart, abdomen, or kidneys.
Disc herniations are normally a further development of a previously existing disc bulge, a condition in which the outermost layers of the anulus fibrosus are still intact, but can bulge when the disc is under pressure. It is more common to have a bulging disc than a herniated disc and herniated disc is likely to be bit painful. Sometimes, It is possible to have a bulging disc without feeling pain also.
Symptoms of a bulging disc can vary depending on the location of the bulge and the types of soft tissue that become involved. They can range from little or no pain if the disc is the only tissue injured.
Common symptoms :
- Muscle weakness, numbness, or tingling in one or both legs
- Increased reflexes in one or both legs that can cause spasticity
- Progressive loss of sensation
- Changes in bladder or bowel function
- Paralysis from the waist down
Bulging disc in cervical spine include pain moving neck, deep pain near or over shoulder blade, radiating pain in upper arm, forearm, and possibly on fingers. Pain from a bulging disc may begin slowly and get worsened over a period of time during certain activities. The symptoms of herniated disc often get better within a few weeks or months.
The treatment for a bulging disc does not necessarily mean that one will need to undergo surgery. It depends on symptoms. This can usually be managed with conservative treatment such as watching and waiting to see whether the symptoms disappear by applying home remedies and physical therapy. Many patients who have problems due to bulging disc completely resolve over a period of time. If symptoms persist, it is better to go in for a AyurvedicPanchakrama treatment, which is found very effective in curing Low back pain and disc bulge. Ayurvedic treatment for spine will help to decompress the spinal cord or spinal nerves.
SPECIFIC AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR DISC BULGE
Ayurveda identifies intervertebral disc bulge in various headings. While deciding the treatment this should be borne in mind. For Kevala Vata we can start Sneha internally and externally immediately.
Treatment consists of improving the general health, weight reduction and improving muscle tone by exercises to spinal muscles. Some of the yogasanas like dhanurasana, which are spinal extension exercises are extremely usefull in straightening the spinal muscles.
AYURVEDIC PANCHAKARMA TREATMENT FOR DISC BULGE
Panchakarma treatment like vasti will yield very good effect for lumbar disc bulge. It will reduce the compression. Vaitarnavasti will yield very good effect for thoracic disc bulge, if done in Yogavasthi method.
HOW VASTI HELPS IN CURING DISC BULGE?
Pharmacokinetic studies have proved that drug administered through rectum can achieve higher blood levels of the drug than oral route due to partial avoidance of hepatic first past’s metabolism. The rectal muscles have a rich blood and lymph supply and drug can cross the rectal mucosa as also they can other lipid membranes. Thus, administration of drugs in the Vasti form has faster absorption and provides quicker results.
